Cal pep (Spain)

Review:

Considered by many locals as one of the very best restaurants in Barcelona, Cal Pep is a tapas bar that specialises in seafood so fresh you wouldn’t be surprised to see it wriggle off your plate. Clams with hot peppers, tuna in sesame sauce and fried crispy prawns are just some of the delicacies that get regulars coming back for more – even if it means queuing for close to an hour just to get a stool by the bar. Once seated waiters, or even the magnanimous Pep himself, are likely to suggest dishes on your behalf, which most consider a great honour. Fun, friendly and a little frantic, a meal at Cal Pep is a quintessential Barcelona experience. If you can’t get a seat then simply check out our dining out home page for more great eateries around the city, whilst gastro-travellers should check out our article on food tours for some tasty activities.

Turandot (Russia)

Review:

Come here if you need a break from the crush of crowded public transport and want to feel like a pampered, refined aristocrat. Considered by many as Moscow’s most intricately decorated restaurant, Turandot opened recently next door to Café Pushkin; both are owned by Andrei Dellos. Just as the Café Pushkin aims at restoring the feel of a 19th-century Russian noble mansion, Turandot tries to imitate the atmosphere of an 18th-century French rococo palace, complete with carved ceilings, painted wall panels, opulent chandeliers, and museum china. All the decor was meticulously created by hand to create what feels like a unique dining experience. The cuisine is an equally intricate fusion of Chinese and Japanese traditions with modern Russian and international trends. Greens, fish, and meat are always fresh and delectable, and the menu is always changing.
