Arnsbourg (France)

Review:

L’Arnsbourg lies in the Alsace region of France, close to the German border. The journey to the restaurant is already a discovery in itself: Before reaching L’Arnsbourg you drive along a small road through the dense forests of the Northern Vosges. After a while, you arrive at this beautifully located restaurant. Lying in the middle of this vast forest area, it is surrounded only by nature

The playful modern inside of the restaurants is a reflection of the cooking style and is also pretty unusual for the region. An example is the large white leather structure that functions both as flower pot and helps dividing the restaurant into smaller areas. Looks rather funky for this old house. Even funkier is the strange black and white  ‘panda man’ standing in the room, it looks as if it comes out of a cartoon and shows the chef’s fascination for Asia.

The chef, Jean Georges Klein’s style can best be described as modern. He employs all sorts of gimmicks and has a pretty unusual CV. It was only when he was 40 years old that he started cooking. To say that he does a fine job would be an understatement. He does a terrific one. Not having learned from anyone famous, you can really see a unique style in Klein’s food. It is tasty, at times a little over-the-top, but generally great fun to eat.
